This project followed a discussion about color, unity, pattern and balance in art. We discussed how historically different cultures have chosen to express their spirituality, individuality, pride in their family trade, or bloodline etc. through artwork like mandalas or coat of arms. We discovered that in Indian cultures mandalas are usually a very spiritual art form in contrast to the more familial and personal, medieval coat of arms that knights often created to carry on their shields. One of the students cleverly named our project a ‘hand’ala (instead of mandala) due to our using the more personal base shape of our handprint instead of the traditional circle or square.
